This lakeside craftsman home has undergone an extensive renovation and addition by TMS Architect, nestled on Lake Wentworth in eastern New Hampshire. The owners had spent summers in this lake house with their family building lasting memories. Approaching retirement and an expanding family, they searched for properties around this lake that would meet their future needs.
In the end, they realized they did not want to leave this cherished location, its amenities, and a fountain of memories. The property presented a challenge to the architects, as the existing residence was set on a massive ledge outcrop. The new additions were created to be sympathetic to these anchors in the landscape.
The scope of this project entailed the renovation and addition of an existing four-bedroom, three-and-a-half-bathroom weekend home of 2,500 square feet. The dwelling was expanded into a five-bedroom, five-and-a-half-bath home with plenty of space to accommodate an overflow of guests. The renovation caters to the lifestyle needs of the owners and their evolving family and the continued story of new memories on Lake Wentworth.
Plenty of attention was placed on the exterior details of this 4,500-square-foot home to keep it balanced with its smaller neighbors. Room sized, bay windows, and decorative gables break down the mass of the home. Exposed rafter tails, a shingled base, board and batten siding, as well as playful sticking at the tops of the gables are reminiscent of earlier cottage construction around the lake.
A new garage, mudroom, and kitchen addition are set perpendicular to the existing structure to embrace the ledge at the entrance while supplying an alternative entrance to the elevated living level.

The interiors are kept simple and stay with the same cottage palette where detail is used. A reverse board and batten wainscoting are reminiscent of the exterior siding while the custom balcony and stair railings are a playful rhythm of alternating sizes and shapes. The central double volume living space is capped with a new vaulted ceiling of beadboard and bullnose panels.
Stone veneer was added to the existing central fireplace in keeping with a casual lakeside retreat.
