Mindy Gayer Design has renovated this beautiful home that is a soft contemporary interpretation of the coastal style, located in La Jolla, California. It was the owners’ dream to build a home that felt unique to them, and after an extensive remodel, this property became a place they could truly call home.

From the gorgeous limestone floors to the custom white oak cabinetry, the finishes are what sets this project apart. With three young boys at home, the designer balanced the contemporary finishes with family-friendly spaces and an abundance of built-in functionality. Above: The landscaping on this beautiful property is by Karen D. Miller Design. The property is lined with pepper trees, wild grasses, boxwood, and tall hedges for privacy. The ground cover is decomposed granite, which has a soft feel and is low maintenance. To help soften the clean lines, one-of-a-kind vintage pots and wood mortars filled with moss were placed sporadically around the exterior.

Above: The limestone floors, round jute rug, and expansive floor-to-ceiling steel windows in the entry create a space with a soft presence, a bit of texture, and an abundance of California sunshine. The limestone was selected because they work well in high-traffic areas, are low-maintenance, and naturally ages over time. The owners had engineered hardwood flooring in their previous home and said they said they far prefer the limestone!

Above: The designer went with a level five drywall in a soft white hue that makes the interiors feel clean and finished. The white oak planked cabinetry matches the cabinets in the kitchen. The cabinetry all has a touch latch to keep the aesthetic minimal yet easily operable. This hallway cabinet provides overflow storage space for the owners who love to entertain.

Above: The kitchen features planked white oak cabinetry, bringing warmth into this sleek space. The steel hood is custom and spans the entire back wall. The countertops and backsplash are porcelain slabs. The material was selected because it does not stain or etch like natural stone.

This space serves as an extension of the main kitchen for these homeowners who love to cook. One wall is all pantry storage that also stores small countertop appliances. Another has a set of wall ovens and a fridge, another is a desk area, and one has an additional sink and an ice maker.
