This Northwest modern home with timeless design was created by McCullough Architects in collaboration with Tammara Stroud Interior Design, located on Mercer Island, Washington. Every square inch of this dwelling has purpose and function, where people can gather and have privacy, and where they can enjoy the view from pretty much every room.
One important and unique request the owners had was to include a large and functional movement gym for both adults and kids alike. The property is perched high above Lake Washington with sweeping views of Mt. Rainier. The architecture of the home was designed to unite the interior and exterior living spaces in an organic and seamless approach.

Although it was to be a modern light-filled structure, it was also important that this be a warm and family-centered home. With this in mind, the aesthetic goal was to let nature be the guide for selecting colors, finishes, and textures while also infusing playful hues that reflected the youthful and vibrant character of the homeowners.

For the upper floor/main living space, the designers selected rich mossy greens, creams, and caramel hues for the color palate.
Wide European oak planks were used for the flooring throughout, rift oak for the kitchen cabinets, and honed white glass for the kitchen backsplash. Textures were then layered in, such as boucle, leather, and velvet fabrics along with metal and brass for tables. For the light fixtures, they selected handblown glass, brass, and a custom selenite halo.
What We Love: This timeless modern home offers warm and inviting details throughout thanks to thoughtful design selections. The material palette is inspired by the hues of nature, while the use of wood on the floors creates a feeling of warmth. Expansive walls of glazing invite the outdoors inside and capture views of the spectacular scenery. We are loving so many of the elements in this home, especially the playful kid’s spaces.

Located on the lower level are the mudroom, childrenโs rooms, playroom, and 500-square-foot movement gym. To give this level a special feeling of its own, the designers paid attention to fresh, happy, playful colors and finishes. Crisp white paint was used throughout. Colorful pops of oranges and blues were used on the furnishings and art while keeping nature’s lovely greens in the outdoor garden as the backdrop.
The result is a casual vibrant place where kids and parents want to hang out together. The movement gym comes equipped with bright orange monkey bars, climbing rope, and even a water fountain. One side of the movement gym is covered in the original exterior wood siding reclaimed from the prior home on site. Even the gym has the warmth of nature inside.
