A serene home merges with its breathtaking setting of Carmel by the Sea

contemporary-home-exterior

This serene contemporary home was designed by Studio Schicketanz, located in Tehama, a community just outside of the seaside village of Carmel-by-the-Sea, California. The sprawling property of almost 7 acres boasts unobstructed panoramic views of Carmel Valley and the Santa Lucia Range.

This 3,521 square foot structure was sited on a centrally cleared knoll and surrounded by natural woodlands mixed with sculptural coast live oak trees and native grasses. The architects organized the house and guesthouse around a central courtyard, with seamless connections between the interior and exterior.

Textured stone walls give rise to controlled cement steps leading to a crisply modernist structure detailed with geometric framing and supporting a cantilevered roof that offers a shaded penumbra around the entirety of the structure.

Light is at play everywhere, from the dappled light that hits the stone wall to the reflection of the majestic neighboring tree in the house’s expansive glass facade.

What We Love: This serene home was designed to highlight the beauty of its surrounding natural environment. Interior living spaces were designed to not detract from the setting but to enhance it. We are loving the neutral palette complemented by stylish yet comfortable furnishings. The floor-to-ceiling windows help to create light and airy spaces while embracing nature and inviting it inside.

On the interior, neutral tones work with the couple’s art collection and pops of luxurious detail like an antique dresser and a smooth round tub to offer a consistent feeling of an evocatively natural aesthetic. Indoor and outdoor spaces flow seamlessly together through the barest hint of doorways and enclosure; everywhere is permeated by sun and sky.
