Danze and Davis Architects are the owners and creators of this beautiful sustainable home located in Jonestown, a city in Travis County, Texas. Winning multiple awards, this energy star-certified dwelling was constructed to compliment the lifestyle needs of a family of four in the Texas Hill Country.
Encompassing 4,243 square feet of living space, this dwelling boasts five bedrooms and three-and-a-half bathrooms. This project began with orientation — this includes solar orientation, tree locations, prevailing wind patterns, slope, view, accessibility, and outdoor living spaces.

The property offers spectacular long-range views, coupled with an extremely sloped topography. “Determining orientation, while designing for the most efficient use of the building and foundation materials, was challenging, yet cost-effective and was one of the first places integrated design “paid off” in the home design process,” states the architects.
The project team collaborated to integrate the home’s design into the slope, with the main living space slightly above grade at the front of the residence. A daylight basement was integrated into the slope to house the lower bedrooms and a game room. The main objective was to appropriately size the rooms to avoid wasteful space and leftover materials.
When designing for energy efficiency a southerly facing home is most ideal for solar orientation and collecting prevailing breezes, especially coming up from the water in the valley. Due to this and integrating a daylight basement and crawl space, large overhangs, efficient orientation, and other sustainable features, this dwelling can operate on one HVAC unit, and achieve Energy Star Certification.
Other subtle sustainable features in this Texas home include a roof that is simple but elegant and will provide an excellent foundation for green features such as rainwater collection and solar panels.
For comfort and health in everyday living, the design allowed for the traffic flow and visual flow of the house to work well and be pleasing to the eye, while keeping private spaces private, public areas open with good sightlines, and careful consideration of interior and exterior views of the lake and surrounding mature hardwood trees.
