This contemporary home was designed by Rockefeller Kempel Architects, located in Oregon’s Willamette Valley on approximately 30 acres of forest and rolling green hills. This beautiful dwelling is both a reflection of its ownerโs Southern California heritage and thoughtful integration into its Pacific Northwest landscape.
The homeโs massing is purposefully organized to take advantage of the picturesque site. Itโs stretched and shaped to maximize views toward the surrounding forest in one direction and layered valley views in the other. The main and secondary wings are connected by a second-story bridge spanning between.

At the main entry is a connective two-story glass volume with a library stair tower, where both monumental stair and home library are seamlessly combined. It serves not only as the homeโs primary focal point but reflects the familyโs core value, excellence through education.
Bringing abundant natural daylight in to combat the often dreary, Pacific Northwest weather was of primary importance for this project. Glass clerestories flood the interior with perfectly balanced indirect natural daylight, often eliminating the need for artificial lighting, even on dark wintery days.
High-efficiency glazing allows for large expanses of glass and daylight while maintaining thermal comfort. Radiant floor heating throughout keeps its owners comfortable all year round.
An honesty of materials is seen in the palette of natural stone and wood used throughout. Stone fireplaces anchor both the living room and kitchen-master bedroom outdoor covered decks. They serve as important focal points for family gatherings. The stone is locally sourced at a nearby Washington quarry just across the Columbia River border, in Washougal.
Raw steel accents abound, from a rhythmic steel colonnade in the living room, and its custom wall library, to the monumental library stair tower stringers. Warm wood tones of American Walnut, French Oak, and Western Red Cedar are used throughout.
Thoughtful construction detailing, simplicity, and a modern design rationale dictate the design of this Pacific Northwest hidden gem.
What We Love: This beautiful home showcases the most picturesque views of the Willamette Valley throughout the interiors. We are loving the attention to detail and the fabulous selection of materials and finishes to provide this contemporary home with warmth and character. Cozy window seats provide spots to curl up with a good book on a rainy day, while covered porches offer shelter from the elements and an indoor-outdoor connection.
