Tour a stunning midcentury house with inspired views of Sag Harbor Cove

Today’s midcentury modern house tour designed by Blaze Makoid Architecture is located in North Haven, a village on Long Island, New York. The site merges two half-acre waterfront properties that overlook Sag Harbor Cove, the village wharf, and a small, saltwater pond. At the front of the home, the facade represents a primarily sold form, with the only interruption being a stone-clad stair tower.

On the water side of the dwelling, you will find a more complex, glazed composition that features a series of stacked and shifted glass planes. When designing for this home, the architects found their inspiration from the natural surroundings. They were intrigued by the idea that the view was over layers of water (the pond then the harbor) and wished to extrapolate this condition by creating a layered experience.

In order to negotiate a very steep pitch to the site, you approach the dwelling by meandering down a pathway that zigzags down the slope. Once you approach the front door, you are able to see through the entire house, to an integrated pool (another layer of water) and beyond to the cove and harbor.

What We Love: This midcentury house tour features a beautiful connection between the indoors and out, soaking in the heavenly water views. The pivoting glass doors in the living room are a striking design feature, linking this interior space to the alfresco dining. We are especially loving the timeless design aesthetic and the clean, contemporary lines in the gorgeous kitchen.

To facilitate entertaining over the course of the day, the core of the house was designed to open on both sides, enabling events to seamlessly transition from waterside activities during the day, to a quiet outdoor dining experience in a garden court in the evening, tracking the sun through the course of the day.

In the kitchen, gray Caesarstone countertops beautifully complement the walnut millwork. The porcelain floors have a stone finish that is in line with the simplicity of the design.

The central entertaining space helps to define the separation between public functions such as living, dining, and kitchen areas from the junior suite on the ground floor. On the second floor, a family den creates a common, ‘joined’ space that links the primary suite and children’s bedrooms.

The material palette used throughout is simple and timeless – wood, glass, and stone. The windows and doors in this home were sourced from Fleetwood Windows & Doors.
