This shingle-style Colonial cottage was beautifully renovated by designer Thom Filicia, located in East Hampton, a village in Suffolk County, New York. This historic home was given a fresh and playful makeover for a young couple with two children.
At the request of the homeowners, this home needed to have a relaxed vibe, durable materials, and a touch of whimsy. They desired pops of color, pattern, and a layering of textures — all of which became the inspiration for the revival of this home.
Step inside this warm and inviting home to find timeless styling and comfortable living spaces.
Classic details include a traditional staircase, paneled wainscoting, and a columned fireplace. The designer selected a combination of comfortable yet tailored furnishings. On the walls, raffia wallcovering adds texture while providing contrast with the white walls and painted floors.
What We Love: This East Hampton cottage is brimming with personality, it’s fresh, light, and full of color and pattern. The designer did a wonderful job of preserving historic details and mixing traditional pieces with playful touches to create a family home that caters to both children and adults alike. We are especially loving the fabulous sleeping porch and breezy indoor-outdoor connection, overall a beautiful home that feels warm and welcoming.

The media room features henna-hued braided hemp wallcovering, bringing a sense of warmth into this space. Custom built-in bookcases flank the original fireplace.
In the dining room, the same wallcovering is repeated from the living room, creating a sense of unity. The chairs at the end of the table are upholstered in Belgian linen, while the side chairs are woven leather complimented by a rustic trestle table that can be extended for extra dinner guests.
The kitchen features a painted floor in red, white, blue, and gray stripes that brings a playful touch to this space. Since this room is located by the pool, it needed to be durable enough to accommodate wet bathing suits and people coming in and out for snacks and beverages. This casual space is perfect for family breakfasts with a beautiful view of the backyard.
This inviting master bedroom reflects a Boho vibe, with painted white walls and floors serving as a backdrop to the playful mix of colors, patterns, and textures.
The guest bedroom features an antique rattan bed and playful pops of color in the graphic pillows. The hand-painted lapis-blue wallcovering has metallic gold specks that resemble a night sky.
The kid’s bedroom has a beach vibe that includes surfboard wallpaper, red knitted poufs, and a life preserver pillow along with a sailboat pillow.
The kid’s playroom offers a touch of whimsy with a layering of striped rugs, bent wire chairs, a knit pouf, and mushroom stools.
This sleeping porch is connected to the kitchen area via a dutch door, one of the designer’s favorite spaces that he designed in this home. This space has a wonderful indoor-outdoor connection and is idyllic for sipping on a delicious drink at sunset.
Just off the kitchen is this outdoor dining area, further extending this family’s eating options and is also perfect for entertaining.
This inviting gathering area around the pool is a contained space, which is perfect for keeping an eye on the kids. This outdoor oasis feels like a secret garden. The designer selected a combination of organic furnishings and classic pieces, including woven chairs and rope side tables.
