See the incredible transformation of a midcentury Eichler in Burlingame

Robert Nebolon Architects is responsible for this 1960’s midcentury Eichler renovation, located in Burlingame, a city in San Mateo County, California. Eichler homes are examples of Modernist architecture that has come to be known as “California Modern”, and typically feature glass walls, post-and-beam construction, and open floorplans in a style indebted to Frank Lloyd Wright and Mies van der Rohe — as stated in Wikipedia.

The architect was approached by a couple (for whom the architect had designed two homes previously) to help them remodel this Eichler home. The previous owners had remodeled the home to the point of abuse and the new owners decided to do a full-scale remodeling and upgrade to the dwelling.

The entire front elevation was remodeled to be similar to the previous Eichler and to fit into the Eichler neighborhood. However, the remodeling updates the Eichler look.

Bonelli Doors + Windows is the brand of glazing that can be found throughout the home, creating a fabulous indoor-outdoor connection while flooding the interiors with natural light.

Having grown up on the Peninsula and lived in Burlingame briefly, I know the location well. I always love seeing those older homes restored and updated – especially MCMs, Craftsman bungalows, and 1930s Spanish revival styles. This new exterior is gorgeous, and the interior remodel appears to incorporate a flow for modern living and conveniences while mostly honoring the original spirit of the home. Personally, I would have opted for medium toned woods and more organic and curated touches throughout, but these are surely homeowner preferences. I hope the new owners appreciate this treasure of a home and recognize how… Read more »

Such a bore! Looks like a corporate hotel with its hideous chain store style ceiling fixtures, the predictable clumsy block kitchen island and of course the impossible to clean angular sinks. It would have been better to leave this house to someone who gets it and have those nouveau riche owners buy a cookie cutter ubiquitous house like there are too many around! Pity!
