sKout Interior Design was responsible for the renovation of this family dream home with boho chic interiors, located in Newport Beach, California. This is the designer’s own family home, which was originally just 1,500 square feet of living space. To accommodate the lifestyle needs for this family of six, the designer increased the footprint to 3,200-square-feet. This home also takes advantage of that quintessential California lifestyle, facilitating a cool indoor/outdoor living vibe.
The designer wanted everything to be family-friendly, open and airy. Since the designer has seen a lot of amazing and beautiful things, she needed to keep herself from getting sidetracked, while acting as her own client. She referred to her own personal Pinterest board that she has been pinning on for years for the inspiration of this project. The designer also has a shop where she has sourced several of the decor pieces in her home — Shop sKout.
The interiors reflect an exquisite balance of vintage charm and a California-inspired aesthetic. Vintage pieces add character and warmth. This includes an antique style sink in the kids’ bathroom and a collection of beautifully intricate dyed rugs — contrasting with the more modern elements.

Above: Matte black paint on the cabinetry and tub adds a nice contrast to the rustic white brick accent wall.
Above: Instead of tile, the designer selected white brick in the master bath, bringing the outside in. By keeping a simple material palette, she could easily switch out art, pillows and rugs.
Above: In the kid’s playroom, the designer had a lot of fun designing this space. A loft up top is perfect for the kid’s to play with friends.
Above: A vintage scoreboard in the playroom was sourced from Found Vintage Rentals. It includes a hidden message, rewired so the score reads 4-2 — meaning four kids to two adults!
The kid’s bedrooms are uniquely designed for their inhabitants — which includes three boys and one girl. For the boys, their bedrooms were designed to be masculine and simple, while enabling them to display items that are sentimental to them. By contrast, the daughter’s room is a serene and elegant retreat, with a boho vibe. The daughter is away at college, so the motive was to entice her to move back in after she has completed her studies.

Above: One the the designer’s favorite pieces in her family dream home is the old marlin hanging on the wall of this outdoor living room. She spotted it on Craigslist and it is signed on the back. Dated in 1972, it says “To Jeff”, which is the name of her husband. Meant to be!
