This modern farmhouse sanctuary was designed as a dream house for a family of five by Surround Architecture, located in Boulder, Colorado. The structure was built to make the most out of its site while enabling the homeowners to live a family life that they had envisioned. This was a family compound on their land, a grouping of buildings that you would find on a traditional farm. They also wished for ornamentation that was deliberate, utilitarian, and with touches of industrial.
To enhance the modern farmhouse aesthetic, the project team focused on the color palette and material selections. Details are crisp and calculated, taking the idea of a traditional black and white palette and modifying it. The darker hues come from blackened steel. The overall feel is clean and modern.
Project Team: Architecture: Surround Architecture | Interior Design: CKY Design, Inc. | Home Builder: Harrington Stanko Construction | Landscape Architecture: Marpa Landscape Architecture + Construction
The house is formed as a U-shaped structure, that appears as a cluster of buildings. With this design, one wing encompasses the bedrooms, while the other houses a guest suite. In the middle, the public living spaces — the entry, great room, kitchen and dining room.
A driving force of the design was to encourage outdoor living. With this in mind, the project team worked from the “inside out”, creating easy accessibility to the yard and open spaces beyond. Interior spaces are comfortable and inviting with a harmonious flow. All of the interior spaces have access or sightlines to the outdoors.
The home was designed to feel like a retreat, there as so many spaces that were designed to feel intimate. Outdoor spaces were designed to feel the same way, with places to gather and have fun.
What We Love: This modern farmhouse sanctuary offers its inhabitants a warm and welcoming atmosphere for family living and entertaining. A strong indoor-outdoor connection enables and encourages the family to spend as much time enjoying the beautiful outdoor spaces right outside their home. Overall, the project team did a fabulous job of mixing exquisite materials, finishes, and furnishings to create an attractive design.
