This breathtaking waterfront cabin is a remodel project by Mindy Gayer Design in collaboration with the homeowner, McEachron Construction & Design, located on Lake Arrowhead, California. Lake Arrowhead is an unincorporated community in the San Bernardino Mountains of San Bernardino County.
The owners, a husband and wife, wanted a home away from home. Their kids are now grown with their own children, so they wished for a place to gather and spend time outdoors. The vision for this three-story home was a completely open book, with an open timeline to match. The designers were tasked with one level at a time, this way the owners could still enjoy their home during the renovation process.
On the main level is an open plan kitchen and living space. The kitchen footprint was compact, so with the help of the redesign, it has become highly functional. Now the owners can cook large family meals, with modernized amenities. The counter-depth fridge was designed to match the cabinetry, while a custom white oak island helps to make this cozy kitchen appear expansive.
The high ceiling height helps to increase the feeling of spaciousness in this kitchen. A focal point to this space is the hood wall.
What We Love: This waterfront cabin provides a warm and cozy retreat for three generations to enjoy. The project team did a fabulous job of creating a feeling of spaciousness throughout. Bright and airy living spaces with a neutral color palette help to focus views to this home’s lakeside setting. Overall, this home promotes a feeling of tranquility, we love it!

Soaring ceilings in the kitchen beautifully showcases the custom cabinetry, plaster hood, stairwell, and lighting.
In this light-filled living room, white tongue-and-groove walls contrast beautifully with the charred matte black ceilings. A sectional sofa is set next to a window, ideal for reading with a view.
Also on the first level is a guest bedroom and bathroom. Natural light floods the bedroom, which is both tranquil and playful with its mix of patterns and materials.
On the upper level is the owner’s master bedroom suite. All the other bedrooms and living spaces were designed for accommodating guests, while this soothing space was created just for the couple.
A neutral palette was used in the master bedroom. The ceiling is clad with knotty pine, while behind the bed is a backdrop of crisp, white millwork. A custom headboard is fabricated in a rust-hued linen. Suspended from the ceiling and flanking either side of the bed are leather pendants.
On the lowest level is the family suite, which includes a bedroom, bathroom, living area and a small kitchen — ideal for hosting family who requires some extra living space.
This lower level also has a laundry area, concealed by a sliding barn door of black wood. The cabinetry is painted in Millstone Gray 1581 | Benjamin Moore. These color selections help to define the palette of the rest of this level.
In the family room, a collage of images is inspired by this cabins mountain-inspired surroundings. The images really pop against the dramatic backdrop of black wall paneling.
The black wall paneling was also used in this guest bedroom of the lower level family suite.
Lakefront living was a dream for these homeowners. The Chris-Craft boat was restored prior to purchasing this property, one of the principle draws for pulling the trigger on this waterfront cabin. This meant the owners could keep the boat at the lake and take it out when they wish. Now they come to stay at their lakeside retreat almost every weekend.
