Dreamy farmhouse style home perched on the shoreline of Puget Sound

farmhouse-exterior

Dana Webber Design Group is responsible for the design of this dreamy farmhouse style home nestled on the shoreline of Bainbridge Island, Washington. Living spaces were designed for cooking and entertaining, for the children to play and enjoy the great outdoors and to spend quality time with family and friends.

The scope of this project entailed the preservation of a home that protects the fragile shoreline of the Puget Sound. Portions of the structure were removed – improving the shoreline setback. Additions were in the center- leaving shoreline setbacks and neighboring views unaffected. Impervious pathways in the shoreline buffer were removed. Flowerbeds (requiring chemicals fertilizers) were replaced with drought-resistant native vegetation.

Project Team: Architect: Dana Webber Design Group | General Contractor: Fairbank Construction Company | Interior Designer: Mindy Gayer Design | Structural Engineer: Swenson Say Faget | Landscape Architect: Fischer Bouma Partnership

When renovating this home, the project team focused on creating a balance of yin and yang in the design. The exterior of the house is dark—it recedes into the woods and does not dominate the shoreline—it is the soft yin that reflects the calm spirit of the house. The yang is the tower that is the circulation of the house. It reaches up to the sunlight and gives bright form to the design by inviting guests to come inside and enjoy.

What We Love: This dreamy farmhouse style home is amazing and is perfectly built to take in all the beautiful views. The tranquility of the site adds to the overall beauty of this dwelling. We are loving the open and airy feel and all of the attention to detail throughout. An inviting exterior facade welcomes guests inside, where entertaining is at the forefront of this amazing design in the Pacific Northwest.

In the original house, the primary view space was occupied by a disappointing entrance and a heartless steel-and-concrete stairway. The original kitchen was landlocked without views or natural light. The architects placed the kitchen and living areas around the patio. The living areas open with bi-fold doors to connect with the outdoor spaces.

Above: The outdoor kitchen was one of the highest priority design criteria— with its Chilean barbecue driving the design. It is a centerpiece for culinary entertainment and family gathering. The architects worked closely with the masons to create the correct base for the grill, which was flown in from Chile.

One of the best I have seen as it seems to be so livable without being ostentatious. Outside living areas are wonderful with the outside/inside bar tying everything together. Personally I would put a master bedroom area behind the dining room area for the older owners but that is not a criticism. The upper level balcony is blended into the façade so well I didn’t see it the first several times I looked at that the back of the house. A great design.
