Archipelago Workshop is responsible for the design of this contemporary surf shack, located in Carpinteria, a small oceanside city in southeastern Santa Barbara County, California. Originally a near tear-down saddled with unresolved land use issues, this renovated-from-the-studs-up beach house sits next to a world famous point break that more than justified the years-long effort involved in achieving its current form.
Designed on a restrained scale with a ship-builder’s mindset, it is filled with precision cabinetry, built-in furniture, and custom artisanal details that draw from both Scandinavian and French Colonial style influences. With heaps of natural light, a wide-open plan, and a close connection to the outdoor spaces, it lives much bigger than it is while creating minimal impact on a precious marine ecosystem.

What We Love: This contemporary surf shack features a bright and airy makeover that is cozy and inviting. A wide-open floor plan and indoor-outdoor connection helps this home to live much bigger than it is while still maintaining minimal impact on its site. We are especially loving the outdoor living areas, offering the quintessential California lifestyle.
