This California dream home was inspired by a family’s passion for books, designed by Subu Design Architecture in the Pacific Palisades, a neighborhood in the Westside region of Los Angeles, California. Nestled on a downslope property that is set back into a wooded canyon, this dwelling is configured as an “H” shape, breaking up the volume along the street front.
This home is composed of two wings clad in white shiplap siding, which houses the domestic functions of the home. One is for the parents. The other is for the children. The connection in the middle acts as a bridge where public functions occur. This center connection also forges a strong indoor/outdoor connection.
The first-floor great room serves as an area for entertaining. The second-floor reading room is where the children study and read. This is all connected by a library tower, that serves as an entrance and the transitions between the different reading levels.
The interior of this dwelling was inspired by the outdoors. The soft grays and light blue paint colors mimic the skies over Los Angeles. All of the materials selected in the home are selected for their durability. Furnishings are clad in outdoor materials. The exterior outdoor furnishings are composed of plastic, ready to be hosed down. This includes the concrete ping-pong tables, which play double-duty for al fresco dining.
What We Love: This fascinating California dream home designed for a family with an affinity for books offers plenty of opportunities to showcase their book collection throughout. There are some unique design features, such as the hidden door filled with books and the book-inspired wallpaper covering the staircase wall. We would also have loved to have seen a recipe book collection integrated into the island to complete this book-inspired home. How about you?
Tell Us: Are you inspired by a home filled with books? What details in this home did you find most appealing and why in the Comments below!
Note: Take a look at a couple of other must-see home tours that we have featured here on One Kindesign from the portfolio of the architects of this project, Subu Design Architecture: A Manhattan Beach house that is decadent indoors and out and Delectable industrial loft space in Santa Monica, California.
The exterior landscape is also designed with the family in mind. Utilizing the downward slope and the ancient oak tree. There is a built-in slide, which brings you down from the bluestone deck to a treehouse that is built around the oak tree.
