Dennis E. Zirbel, Architect is responsible for the design of this beautiful rustic modern home located in the Lahontan Community in Truckee, California. Homeowner and builder NSM Construction were largely responsible for creating the rustic alpine ambiance, with the help of JJH nterior Design. The exterior facade of this home is clad in heavily textured native basalt, reclaimed wood siding and gnarly, scabrous timbers — lending a strong material presence that is typically not experienced beyond historic structures.
Spread out over two levels, this home encompasses 3,150 square feet of living space with authentic details throughout. To help with this, custom metalwork can be found throughout the home, crafted by Truckee-based Mountain Forge. Examples includes: hammered steel wall hooks in the mudroom (suspended against a heated board-form concrete wall to dry damp ski clothes), metal framework for custom light fixtures (with beer growlers and canning jars used as lamp globes) and a unique stair rail that appears like salvaged parts off a John Deer tractor.
What We Love: This rustic modern home features a material palette that seems to harmonize with its beautiful surroundings. Further integrating the house with it’s site is a fabulous green roof, melding this home into the steep slope. There is also a fantastic indoor-outdoor living vibe, with outdoor access offered from both levels. Overall this home provides wonderful livability, with the capacity to make guests feel instantly at home.

The great room features dual folding doors flanking either side of the chimney, anchored by a chunk of granite that was placed on the side before the foundation was even laid.
