This modern home was designed by Baldridge Architects in collaboration with Acero Construction, located in the Barton Hills neighborhood of Austin, Texas. Created for a family of four, the dwelling is nestled in a cul-de-sac surrounded by woods, opening to views over a protected greenbelt that runs from downtown through the southern part of the city. Taking cues from this remarkable site, the architects conceived of a house that would first conceal, then reveal, the view.
Inspired by traditional Japanese architecture, guests enter into this dwelling through a choreographed entry sequence at the side of a minimalist facade. Only upon arrival into a partially-covered landscaped courtyard do guests see the sweeping lines and dramatic section of the house as it meanders through the trees. Beyond the entry, the house was designed to maximize views at every turn, while also promoting outdoor access to the lush greenbelt below.
The architects designed spaces that affords the homeowners varying experiences throughout the house—some spaces are cozy and nest like, while others are open, bright and dramatic. There is a intriguing quality to the design. At each turn one finds a spatial surprise seamlessly created by the subtle sectional complexity of the structure — terminating at a second-story deck overlooking the expanse of Texas Hill Country.
