Hovering over a dune is this contemporary beach house designed by SAOTA Architects, located just steps from the snow white sands of Robberg Beach in Plettenberg Bay, South Africa. The design of this home was conceived as a simple box, designed to maximize views of the magnificent ocean. The exterior facade was finished in a rough natural texture that references back to the dune and contrasts with the smooth reveal and soffit that tapers to create a delicate frame.
The scale of this remarkable dwelling appears modest from the road, offering privacy for the living areas on the lower level. “Strong horizontality is articulated in the entrance canopy, which is planted with indigenous shrubs cascading over the slab edge,” states the architects.

The beach house takes full advantage of the surrounding views—south-east to the Robberg peninsula and north to the Outeniqua Mountains in the distance. The southern section of the home was designed to be higher, where the facade appears to be sliced off from the northern section, creating a unique sculptural element.
What We Love: This modest beach house is spectacularly perched on the dunes, showcasing marvelous seaside views. The architects did a magnificent job of designing a refined and easy-flowing home, to create an overall unique design. The simple box-like shape of this home helps to perfectly captures the seaside views.

Above: The swimming pool is set on the lower terrace, connected to the main entertainment spaces via a stone staircase, articulated as part of the plinth. The water level is slightly elevated above the deck surface; a rim flow all around creates the illusion that this reflective water body slots into the timber deck. This further enhances the harmony between this refined, easy-flowing beach house and its natural surroundings.
Above: The opening detail in the ceiling runs vertically through the structure, penetrating natural light into the deeper spaces of the home. Illuminated by a skylight above, the stairs are delicately suspended in this void, which also allows views through it.
Above: The staircase is featured as a diagonal line that extends across the cantilevering entertainment terrace. The kitchen is at the heart of the home, serving the living spaces and northern courtyard. The voluminous kitchen opens upwards to the bedroom gallery, allowing natural light to illuminate the space.
