This contemporary hillside home was designed for a busy family by Sundberg Kennedy Ly-Au Young Architects, nestled along theย shores of Lake Washington onย Mercer Island, Washington. Positioned on the western side of the island, this custom 5,500 square foot home is spread out over three levels. It’s materials elements features native cedar,ย blackened steel, glass, rock, and cement.
The original home was small and cluttered, so the architects devised a brand new layout to help accommodate this busy family with young children. The new design maximizes views of the magnificent lake, whileย continuing the neighborhood tradition of mid-century Pacific Northwest modernism.
The residence was conceived as two bars of space, one public and the other private, which are connected via a central double volume space. In the main living area, expansive floor-t0-ceiling windows helps to maximize the views of this lakeside property, while modestly-sized bedrooms were designed to recharge and retreat.
The design emphasizes the seamless connection between interior and exterior living spaces. The residence was orientated on the site to take advantage of the lake views, so water and light are present throughout the interiors. The wall and flooring materials run continuous from indoors to out, blurring the lines between the two spaces.
In order to reach the level of craft and care the architects desired, this project was created in close collaboration with both local craftspeople. Highlights in the design of this property includes: a pivoting front entryway door comprised of bronze, wenge and leather and a custom steel chandelierโwhich can be raised and lowered.
What We Love: Thisย contemporary hillside home was designed to maximize its incredible lake views, while blurring the lines between indoors and out. From the stunning front entryway to the stylish and sophisticated interior design, everything in this home is immaculate. The floor-to-ceiling glass is our favorite feature, framing the views of this home’s superb surroundings.
