This spectacular modern rammed earth home was designed against a mountainous backdrop by Kendle Design Collaborative, located in Paradise Valley, Arizona. The 4,700 square foot residence was constructed with humble materials of earth, wood, stone and glass. A modest yet sophisticated material palette was selected to create warm, contemplative living spaces that connects with the natural desert landscape.
The rammed earth walls and expansive floor-to-ceiling windows allows natural light to the flood the interior spaces—which is protected from the harsh summer sun by deep overhangs and protective roof forms. “These vertical and horizontal building planes create apertures framing distant views focusing the gaze outward and further reinforcing the house’s connection to its desert site,” states the architect.
Complementing the natural materials defining the living spaces are the wood cabinets, stone countertops and limestone flooring. As the day moves from morning to evening, the sunlight has varying effects on the natural materials, which takes on new hues. This subtly alters the room’s character throughout the day.
The abundance of sunlight that reflects inwards from the tall windows and overhead skylights, animates the interior spaces. The result is a celebration mid-century modern design, a humble mix of materials, nature and desert views.

What We Love: The rammed earth home showcases a beautiful mix of natural materials that creates a visual pleasing design aesthetic. Expansive windows helps to bring in natural light while framing the views of the surrounding Arizona desert landscape. The use of wood on the ceiling helps to infuse warmth into the interiors, creating a welcoming effect… Readers, please share with us the design features of this home that you find most notable in the comments below.
