This sumptuous modern residence was designed by architects Nico Van Der Meulen Architects, located in a nature preserve in the affluent town of Bedfordview, in Gauteng, South Africa. The scope of this project entailed creating a family home consisting of 11,840 square feet (1100 square meters) of living space, with spacious entertaining areas and a indoor-outdoor connection. The original home on this property was a single story structure, which in its place, is a brilliant sculptural masterpiece.

An indoor-outdoor connection was attained through the integration of frameless folding glass doors, while making the outdoor patio an extension of the living room. A double height living, dining, kitchen and patio area are arranged in an open layout, creating a visual flow due to the polished concrete flooring. “Angled columns supporting steel beams and the roof pierce through the double height space. These structural elements were designed to appear sculptural,” states the architects.

The residence features four en-suite bedrooms, two children’s bedrooms and a guest bedroom situated on the lower level. The master bedroom suite is located on the upper level. The opulent master bedroom features a spacious private balcony offering spectacular views over the landscape. A luxurious, open plan bathroom flows around a corner, leading one to an incredible dressing room. The master suite also features its own lounge space, offering a television with a fireplace and a small kitchenette cum wet bar.

The homeowners also request their home be energy-efficient, therefore it was decided that a water-based underfloor heating system would be designed. This entailed a series of pipes connected to both solar panels and a heat pump, circulating warm water throughout the floor to heat the space.

The architects also used this system for cooling the home (more appropriate for dry climates). This works by passing chilled water from a ground source heat pump, an air source heat pump or chiller through pipes under your floor. The tubing is embedded in the concrete foundation slab for good conductivity.

What We Love: This impressive modern residence is a celebration of steel, glass and concrete. A sculptural art form that is just as magnificent on the outside as it is on the inside. Loving the openness of this home, with seamless indoor-outdoor transitions that invites nature inside. As with all of this architects work, another beautiful structure for those who love clean, modern design and pushing the architectural boundaries… Readers, please share with us your opinions on this home, do you like this architect’s work?

M Square Lifestyle Design was responsible for the interior design of this fascinating project. Steel perforated panels and off-shutter concrete were amongst the elements used for the interior material palette. The lighting design compliments the bold forms of the home and defines the angles. Concrete, glass and steel visually link the interior and exterior, smoothly integrating architecture and interior design. The furniture, decor and feature lights that complement this are sourced from M Square Lifestyle Necessities. —as stated by the architects.

the answer to your question as to whether I like this place? NO!!! this place looks ridiculous. the thing is, the site appears to offer nice city views, so this monstrosity is a waste of a good site.
