This industrial modern style private residence was designed by JacobsChang Architecture, nestled behind a Ficus hedge in West Hollywood, California. Designed in early 2016, the home was aptly named “Hedge House”, due to its unique and mature landscape element. On the property is a 30 year old hedge, which played a major role in the homeowner’s decision to buy the land. The hedge is set along the property line, which offers a significant amount of privacy. This also enabled “the opportunity to reconsider conventionally visible public spaces (front & side yards) as private garden space,” states the architects.
The home was designed around a two-story interior lightwell, illuminating deep into the heart of the home and spanning out to the living spaces connected to the garden. A mix of materials helps to differentiate public spaces from private spaces: stucco and cedar are used in the private zones; while concrete and steel delineates the open living spaces. Steel pivot doors creates a seamless connection between the living spaces and the backyard garden and swimming pool.

Interesting Fact: The Hedge House is the recipient of the 2017 residential architecture design merit award from the American Institute of Architects, Los Angeles Chapter.
What We Love: This industrial modern home offers its homeowners a unique opportunity to have complete privacy in a neighborhood setting. A beautiful mix of material elements provides a clean-lined aesthetic while still maintaining warmth with the use of cedar wood. An interior lightwell helps to provide natural daylight to the center of the home, keeping living spaces feeling bright and airy. Indoor-outdoor boundaries are blurred thanks to expansive windows, capturing the views of the gardens… Readers, please share with us what you like or don’t like about the design of this home in the comments.

Fact: Power is distributed to the home by a 14 kW rooftop solar array, which supports the main house, guest house and pool heat.
Above: As you can see throughout the lower level of the house, the Ficus hedge provides a consistent reference. It defines the garden spaces and offers a continual backdrop. On the upper level, the hedge reaches as heigh as the windows sills, which enables views beyond the property line.
Above: On the second level, a sunken courtyard provides a lightwell into the master suite: bedroom, closet and bathroom. Natural light penetrates through these spaces and into a central staircase, radiating through the home.
