A newly built three-story home for a family of five offers spacious and luminous interiors by Kathryn Quinn Architects, located in the Lincoln Park neighborhood of Chicago, Illinois. The family had previously resided in a town home across the street, when the property became available, they made the the conscious decision that is was time to upsize their living conditions, after living so long in a narrow space.
In their new home they were looking to have increased natural light, a more spacious kitchen and individual rooms for the kids as well as sleeping quarters for overnight guests. Their home not only had to be harmonious with their surroundings but also be a welcome addition. The home is situated in a Chicago Landmark District, so the design needed to compliment the historical and architectural features of the neighboring properties.
The resulting structure takes form with a nod to 19th century Italianate design, featuring a limestone foundation and a brick clad facade with zinc sheet metal cornices among other quaint details.
Unlike some of the other historical homes in the area, this new dwelling features expansive windows that illuminates the home with natural light. There are multiple openings throughout the wide hallways of the public spaces, which enables light to flow through the home unhindered.
The spacious lot allowed the architect the opportunity to integrate a courtyard in the backyard, showcasing a water feature and winding paths that contrasts with the hard lines of the exterior structure. This offers a more family-friendly exterior atmosphere, while the front of the property offers a more formal aesthetic.

On the interiors, materials of refined wood paneling, steel balustrades on the staircase as well as reclaimed wood beams on the ceiling and an exposed brick wall in the family room, creates a more casual atmosphere. Custom built-ins are incorporated into the design scheme for storage and seating.
Although the home is quite large, the interior design team from Fredman Design Group worked to create relaxed and welcoming spaces that are quite cozy and warm. Everything is very natural, flowing from one space to the next. There are many handcrafted details throughout, imparting an old-world aesthetic, to add to the timeless feel of the home.
