Nestled quietly on a lakeside location in Muskoka, Ontario, Canada, this stunning cottage built by Bachly Construction is traditional on the outside yet modern and relaxed inside. The property, which is owned by the owner of the building company, underwent an extensive renovation and expansion. The homeowners goal was to create a peaceful retreat to enjoy summers on Lake Joseph. Offering 4,000 square feet of comfortable yet grand living spaces with seven bedrooms, there is plenty of space to host family and friends for weekends and holidays. The cottage is illuminated by natural light that penetrates the spaces through windows around every corner, capturing sensational views of both lake and surrounding woods. Upon entrance into the home, you are welcomed with nautically nuanced decor and a small bench to take your shoes on and off.
What We Love: This cottage retreat is very charming, it has a nice mix of nautical elements and a natural, woodsy feel. We love how the white walls feel crisp and clean and play off the darker wood flooring and ceiling trusses in the great room. The screened-in porch was a wonderful idea to incorporate into this lakeside home. You can feel like you are immersed in nature enjoying the fresh summer breezes… but minus those pesky mosquitos!
Lake houses are a favorite here on 1 Kindesign and we have showcased plenty! They have some very inspiring ideas that you can incorporate into your own home, just have a look at these beautiful cottages in Muskoka:
Soaring cathedral ceilings in the great room features open trusses and natural elements, that makes a nod to the outdoors. The floor-to-ceiling fireplace showcases Muskoka granite and a mantel comprised of a reclaimed wood beam.
The rustic decor was inspired by one of the homeowner’s favorite vacation spots on an island in the Grenadines. The area is influenced by a mix of wood and stone with white fabrics.
A sophisticated kitchen with an industrial flair began with a pair of pendant lights that looks like vintage weight scales. Custom dark cabinetry is paired with granite countertops and backsplash and finished with floating stainless steel shelving.
The couple loves to entertain, so a large trestle dining table decorated with wishbone style chairs was a must in the design scheme. The room was kept open and airy by not placing an area rug underneath the table.
A screened-in porch faces the lake, which the homeowners describe as have a tree house feel to it. Cedar clads both the floor and ceiling, which is extremely durable, perfect for a lake house retreat!
The taupe-green of the exterior facade blends well with the surrounding terrain. The spacious property also features a boathouse, perfect for housing water toys.
