19th-Century barn in Pennsylvania is restored into a stunning rustic home

This late 19th-century barn was completely transformed into a beautiful home by Archer & Buchanan Architecture, nestled on a sprawling 20-acre property in Gladwyne, Pennsylvania. Known as “Maple Hill Barn,” this house was originally owned by Main Line architect Walter Durham (1896-1976). A Main Line architect is someone who works in the Philadelphia Main Line area, known for its unique range of classic and modern architecture.

The structure was lovingly restored with recycled barn materials, insulated, and resided to maintain the feeling of a barn on the interior. The finished work includes the great room, kitchen, study, and bath on the main level and the screened porch, play area, and wine cellar on the lower level. The interior renovation aimed to preserve the architectural integrity of the space while creating a functional and inviting atmosphere that is conducive to entertaining. Locally sourced reclaimed materials pay homage to the surrounding landscaping, adding rustic charm.

New materials, such as weathered whitewashed cabinets and natural soapstone countertops, blend perfectly with the family heirlooms, handcrafted furnishings, and light fixtures, making them focal points of the design.
