This idyllic modern woodland retreat, designed by JLGdesign along with Tammara Stroud Design, is nestled on Bainbridge Island, Washington, a scenic island in Puget Sound. The owners recently became empty nesters and decided a lifestyle change was in order. They wished to downsize and simplify their lives while building their dream house surrounded by a woodland garden.
The wife is an avid gardener and desired a low-maintenance garden that would give her a reason to spend time enjoying the great outdoors. This home is nestled on a heavily forested site, boasting wondrous views of the water’s edge along with the Seattle skyline. The primary design goal of this project was to marry the interior with the intrinsic beauty of the outdoors, nurturing an immersive indoor-outdoor experience.

Alongside architectural features like the vaulted ceilings and wood canopy, we achieved the harmonious effect through the use of natural elements and a subtle palette. The light fixtures were paramount to the design, as they were sculptural yet transparent. The furniture selected features pristine craftsmanship with handsome detailing and clean lines, and textiles throughout are subtle and understated. The end result is a sublime home that embodies the epitome of refined living.

What We Love: This modern woodland retreat provides a warm and welcoming respite for a couple to enjoy island living and abundant nature. Large expanses of glazing blur indoor-outdoor boundaries, flooding the interiors with much-needed natural light. We love all of this home’s stylish details, from the light fixtures to the artwork, yet subdued enough so as not to detract from the idyllic surroundings. This beautiful rustic-modern home offers a peaceful lifestyle that honors the landscape.
