This lakeside family retreat, beautifully transformed by architectural studio Carlton Edwards, is perched on steep terrain to maximize views of a tranquil cove on Pickwick Lake in Counce, Tennessee. Its timeless character draws on the architecture of grand summer-lodge-style homes from the 1930s — the same era when the lake was developed.
The compound includes a main house and a boathouse, each thoughtfully sited to maximize views in all directions. The exterior is carefully crafted of cedar shingle siding and native stone. A color palette of grays and greens was derived from the water oaks, moss, and lichen found on the hillside.

What We Love About This Home
This lakeside family retreat offers its inhabitants a wonderful getaway to relish in the tranquility of magnificent water views. Spaces throughout this home were designed to maximize these views, including the terraced outdoor living spaces and a newly developed boathouse. Overall, the project team did a fabulous job of renovating this home’s interiors, creating a timeless aesthetic that will be enjoyed by family and friends for years to come.

Above: The boy’s bunk room was designed to mimic an old sleeping porch. Selected for durability, wood plank tile flooring with a crackle glaze gives the feel of an old painted porch floor. Windows wrap the sides of this room, flooding the space with natural light while providing lake views. The interior wall is clad with cedar shingle siding from the exterior, lending an authentic feel of an enclosed sleeping porch. On the ceiling, a wall covering of stars provides a magical nighttime sky ambiance.

This bedroom suite features a sleeping alcove with four upholstered twin beds and concealed storage drawers. Walls and ceilings are clad with wood planks.

A floating vanity features detailing on the drawers — random-width and depth planks with an enlarged bead on the drawers. The countertop is honed white marble. Glass tile was selected for the shower to enhance the water and lake feel.

Above: The owner’s bath was designed to feel like an enclosed sleeping porch. The vanity is placed in front of the windows, providing breathtaking lake views. Brass-framed mirrors are custom. The vanity is designed with random-width and depth planks and adorned with brass and bone hardware. Gracing the vanity is a Lagos azul limestone countertop.

Above: On the floor, copper penny tile is bordered with an espresso walnut plank. In a frame above the tub, a textured handmade paper provides a delicate feel against the natural wood planking on the walls and ceiling. This space offers a beautiful balance of masculine and feminine, rustic and modern.

Above: Water oaks found on the site were the inspiration for the material selection and color palette of the exterior facade. Paint colors for the trim, shutter, and doors were derived from the palette, which includes the dark mossy bronze green.

Above: The house is oriented on the site to maximize views of the lake. Sunset views can be enjoyed from the cooking porch and entertainment terraces, which are centered around an expansive swimming pool. Due to their vertical nature, retaining walls of Arkansas fieldstone were used in several outdoor spaces.
