17th-Century Colonial style farmhouse gets a stunning renovation in Connecticut

colonial farmhouse style home exterior

This historic 17th-century colonial farmhouse was completely reimagined by McBride Architects, nestled on a  17-acre property with a pond and pool on the shoreline in Stonington, Connecticut. The original part of the historic center hall Colonial dates back to 1680.

The goal of the renovation was to accommodate the family’s more modern way of living. Small, underutilized rooms were reworked to create additional living spaces, while exterior windows were enlarged, bringing the bucolic landscape into the historic interior. Continue below to see more of this beautiful home transformation…

Taking two-and-a-half years to complete, the project team focused on the homeowners’ love of entertaining. They reorganized the house’s architectural plan to create a harmonious connection between indoors and out. Doors were added and enlarged to enhance egress, while new windows helped to capture views of the surrounding terrain.

The family can host large gatherings both indoors and out, thanks to comfortable yet stylish living spaces, a cozy screened porch, and new outdoor spaces. In the kitchen and dining area, double French doors that lead out to the screened-in porch fold back similarly to bi-folds, blurring the lines between indoors and out.

Instead of adding to the home’s original footprint, the architect reworked the existing plan to be more functional. The underutilized attic space was one of the most significant changes in this home. The dormered windows bring in an abundance of natural light. This space provides storage and makes for the ultimate sleepover space.
