1. Incorporate a Dining Area.
Transform your sunroom into a multifunctional space with a small dining table for meals or entertaining, just like this farmhouse-style sunroom of a home in Austin, Texas. (via High Cotton Home & Design-Dabney Designs by Tricia)
2. Add A Statement Light Fixture.
Stunning water views surround this chic and comfortable porch with limestone floor, fieldstone fireplace, chocolate brown wicker, custom-made upholstery, and a birdcage lantern. The blue paint on the ceiling is a custom mix. They wanted to ensure it worked well in the reflected light from the waterfront view — not too blue, not too green, not too light, but just enough to read as blue. TIP: Put a few large samples (at least 2 ft by 2 ft) to help make the selection. Paint changes color — depending on the light, time of day, when the room will be used, etc. Sometimes we’ll even paint different hues around a room so the paint looks the same, even though it is actually different. 3. Create Seasonal Warmth.
Both the screen panels and the glass panels for this 3-season sun porch were custom-designed and fabricated. The custom-made screen / glass frames were painted black to be less obtrusive to the view outside (in the summertime, the glass panels are swapped out for insect screens). Because of its carefully considered orientation, the porch can be warm on a sunny winter day. The sun’s rays pass through the south-facing glass window panels and warm the stone floor (natural cleft bluestone).
In-floor radiant heating helps to take the edge off. This porch is protected from wind-driven rain by the surrounding woods. In addition, there are decent-sized roof overhangs above the screens. If a little water does get in, the south-facing orientation allows the sun to quickly dry things out. The wall trim is finished with “Cabot’s” OVT solid acrylic stain – color “#0611 White”. The screen / window frames are painted a custom color. The sunroom is separated from the rest of the house via exterior-grade French doors. (via Whitten Architects)
4. Fireplace Focal Point.
This beautiful and inspiring sunroom is in a house located in Newington, New Hampshire, and it overlooks Great Bay. There are two beams in the sunroom; they are 8″ deep. The beams were milled from oak trees. The finish was a type of furniture oil. The material on the ceiling is beadboard, and under the windows are the shakes that match the exterior of the home. The windows are EZ Breeze, vinyl, with no insulation. The dimensions of this space are approximately 14 x 16.
The sunroom is heated by the focal point wood-burning fireplace and cooled by a ceiling fan. The floor is Azek decking, open to the outside, but it has screening underneath it (to keep bugs out). Because it’s not enclosed and insulated, it gets to about 35 degrees on the coldest NH winter day. Even with the fire going, it’s too cold in January and February. The vinyl window/screen system opens all the way, allowing for a lot of cross-breeze from the wind off the water. (via Wysteria Design)
5. Include a Coffee Table.
This four-season porch of a home in Minnesota features stunning views of the lake and running trails. The furniture in the space is a mix of old and new, featuring both designer and custom-made pieces. A navy blue flooring material was used on the ceiling to add interest, color, and texture. The ceiling fan was from Filament Lighting in St. Louis Park, MN. A new Waverton Cambria top sits on an antique Weiman lacquer table base.
The sofa is from Grange Furniture. The pillows and cushion fabric are custom. Scale and proportion to the space are essential. By placing the rug at an angle, the room feels less narrow and severe. The windows are Marvin Windows. The Douglas Fir flooring was stained to match the interior floors. This porch is about 8′-7″ wide x 33′-3″ long. It is long and narrow, so arranging furniture that was proportionate in size was key. (via Modern Design Cabinetry)
6. Add a Statement Rug.
Off the kitchen and overlooking the pool, this porch in Charleston, South Carolina, was remodeled into an office and cozy sunroom, quickly becoming the grandchildren’s favorite hangout. Sunbrella fabrics protect against the sun and sticky hands. This room was an open porch in this circa 1820s house. It was poorly enclosed along the way. Very little of the original structure was removed.
The roof was intact, but the ceiling was raised. The doors into the house were removed, making the sunroom part of the house. The flooring is built up on a brick basement. The outside stairs exit into a garden. As for size, it is long and narrow, only about 8′ wide. The patterned area rug anchors the room, introducing color, texture, and warmth. (via J. Jilich Design & Associates)
7. Layer Soft Textiles.
A picturesque house nestled amongst the leafy lanes of Burlingame, California, features this warm and inviting sunroom. This space is grounded by a hand-woven chunky loop natural jute area rug; similar can be found at Kirkland’s. The jute rug helps to soften the red brick floor. A pair of chaise lounges with English roll arms was sourced from IKEA. The bouclé throw blanket with chunky tassels will help to provide cozy warmth during the cooler months. Additional details include inen throw pillows and a sheepskin throw. The hanging rattan chair, by Serena & Lily, offers a cozy spot to curl up with a good book. (via Banner Day Interiors)
