Inside this agrarian mountain home peacefully nestled in the Blue Ridge Mountains

mountain farmhouse style home exterior

This agrarian mountain home, designed by Purple Cherry Architects, is tucked into the Blue Ridge Mountains just outside Charlottesville, in Afton, Virginia. The residence embodies a balance between rustic agrarian character and modern functionality. The home was intentionally designed to appear as if it had always been a part of the land.

The use of vertical hemlock board-and-batten siding and a Corten steel roof, which beautifully weather with time, establishes an authentic, enduring presence. Floor-to-ceiling windows frame sweeping 270-degree views of the mountains, ensuring the surrounding landscape is a central element of daily life. The residence was strategically designed to accommodate both multi-generational living and aging in place. A lower-level private suite with its own entrance and a private suite above the garage offer autonomy for the homeowners’ adult children..

Inside, the home reveals a warm, eclectic spirit. Layers of collected antiques from High Point Market, hand-carved doors, Turkish runners, and bohemian décor seamlessly blend with modern conveniences, including radiant-heated floors and a back kitchen.

What We Love About This Home

We love how seamlessly this agrarian mountain home belongs to its setting. The architect envisioned a residence that feels as though it has always been part of the landscape, revealing itself on approach like a familiar barn. A Corten steel roof, hemlock siding, and steel-and-glass entry doors work together to create timeless character while framing views of the surrounding Blue Ridge Mountains.
