One of the hardest parts of decorating any room is deciding on color scheme selection, partly the reason being that color can play a vital role in bringing a room together – making it appear complete and easy on the eye. There are a few different routes that you can take when using color to tie a room together.

Use One Main Color

Choosing one main color to use throughout an entire room will cleverly bring all elements of a room together, when the room is designed correctly of course. Let’s take a living room for example. The main color could be one of the colors from your couch design, then the lamps, some of the pillows, some of the artwork, and a few decorator pieces could all contain that same color.

Incorporate a Color Family

Instead of selecting just one main color, try selecting two or three colors that you’ll incorporate into the design of the room. Some people choose one main color and then a secondary color, and a third color. Doing it this way results in more of the main color being seen throughout the room with slightly less of the secondary color, and just a small trace of the third color. This way you’re not forced into having an even amount of three colors, but, at the same time, you can see evidence of the three main colors throughout the entire room.

Include Artwork

When you’re not sure what colors to choose, choose a color (or two or three) from the artwork you have displayed. Whether it’s a piece you purchased at an art store or a trio of photos you had printed on canvas prints, pick a few colors from your artwork and highlight those colors in your furniture choices or decorating pieces around the room.

Use Fabric

Instead of using wall color or decorative pieces to tie your room colors together, consider using the fabric itself to do it for you. Choose a fabric that you use can for throws, pillows, and lampshades. In the bedroom, the fabric can also be on the duvet or bedspread. In the dining room it could be on the chair cushions, chair covers, or the placemats. You may even decide to frame fabric prints for the wall, be as creative as you like with it.

Use Area Rugs

An easy way to tie colors together is through rugs. You can use area rugs to highlight the texture of color of your wood or carpet floors, which can also be used to tie the pieces of furniture together. Use area rugs with your room’s colors underneath the dining or kitchen table. In the bedroom, use them at the bottom and sides of the bed. In the sitting or living room use them in front of your sofas or couches and underneath your coffee tables. You can also use them as runners in and out of a room. The most important thing to remember is that the color or colors in the rug are tied to the same color or colors in other parts of the room.

You don’t have to be intimidated when trying to use color to tie a room together. Once you’ve selected your colors of choice, then your next goal is to simply spread those colors throughout the room using different decorative items like artwork, furniture, fabric and rugs etc. Happy decorating!
