Located in Bellevue, Washington, this remarkable modern house designed by David Coleman Architecture, showcases a mesmerizing floating roof design reminiscent of origami, gracefully crowning the primary living area. This dwelling was devised to maximize its beautiful surroundings, creating a luminous pavilion amongst the towering fir trees.
Strategically positioned in close proximity to the region’s technological hub, this abode seamlessly melds modern connectivity with the tranquility of its pastoral backdrop, ensuring optimal comfort even through the lengthy, damp winters that Seattle is renowned for.

The homeowners’ yearning for a dwelling suffused with light and intimately connected to the natural environment was brilliantly fulfilled. In pursuit of this vision, the architects created an “L” shaped floor plan, situating the structure further within the grounds to create an expansive outdoor living area.
Amidst the property, a stand of mature native cedar trees stands tall, a testament to the cherished natural heritage that has been carefully preserved. Upon entering through the gate, one climbs up through the trees and into the Auto-courtโthe beginning of many “outdoor rooms.” These distinct spaces, outlined by vine-draped concrete walls, unfold gradually.
Progressing up a wide staircase, visitors reach the Meadow-court, adorned with swaying field grasses and hosting a tranquil seating nook. A gentle water flow between the staircase and the house infuses the path with a calming ambiance and masks the nearby road’s noise. The trilogy culminates in the Terrace-court, seamlessly linked to the living area, dedicated to seasonal open-air dining and the cozy camaraderie of evening campfires.

The interior spaces are divided into public and private wings. The roof above the public area, upheld by four concrete columns, boasts a simple pavilion design. Crafted from a single folded sheet, its origami-inspired arrangement both elevates its appearance and directs focus outward to the landscape, enabling abundant daylight penetration.
The synergy between indoor and outdoor is evident, visually seamless, with functional delineation achieved by glass walls.
The material palette is intentionally minimal, designed to reduce visual noise and strengthen the calming quality of the site. Sapeli windows and doors from sustainable sources frame the views, while porcelain tile floors and concrete terraces foster indoor-outdoor flow.
Brightness is upheld by white plaster walls and ceilings, complemented by contrasting blackened steel hardware. Sustainability is addressed through geothermal heat, robust insulation, passive solar design with thermal mass, and expansive overhangs for shading.

The family bedrooms and baths reside in the private wing, characterized by a low-slung roof and dark-toned finishes, imparting a distinct and cozy aesthetic. A childrenโs play loft finds its place beneath the intersection of the great room roof. A private terrace is situated just off the owner’s bedroom.
