This modern minimalist house in North Phoenix, Arizona, was designed by The Ranch Mine in partnership with Boxwell Homes. Built on a 2-acre desert lot, the 4,090-square-foot home wraps around a central courtyard, forming a distinctive “O” shape that gives the residence its name: ‘O-asis.’ Throughout the home, slat-walnut paneling, polished concrete floors, and expansive glazing from Western Windows create a seamless connection between sleek modern design and the surrounding desert landscape.

A 15.12-kW Tesla solar system powers the home, reflecting the architects’ goal to “integrate modern life with the timeless beauty of music, sunlight, and desert flora and fauna.” Sunken low into the terrain, the house stands just 12.5 feet tall and is enclosed by a rusted steel rattlesnake fence, a striking, practical detail unique to its desert setting.

What We Love About This Home

This modern minimalist house was designed to move away from what defines a typical luxury home, opting instead to focus on modern luxuries such as energy independence, low maintenance, indoor-outdoor living, growing your own food, peace and tranquility, multigenerational living, and a connection with nature. Overall, this home provides a spectacular oasis in the desert for multi-generational living.

At the heart of this home is a spacious courtyard that filters in indirect natural light, fresh air, and unique plants. Pocketing glass doors on either side of the main living space provide cross-ventilation throughout the house while transforming the main living areas into a covered, open-air space in seconds.

The strong horizontal form of this dwelling is used to highlight the dramatic shapes of the rugged desert landscape. Breaking out from the O-shaped plan of this structure, the swimming pool draws your eye outwards, toward the desert landscape and rugged mountain views to the South. A built-in fire pit bench frames the opposing edge of the swimming pool.

Above: A yoga studio was designed for the owner’s mother, a yoga instructor. Through expansive glazing, this meditative sanctuary captures vistas of the desert landscape. The rest of this dwelling uses concrete for flooring; this space was outfitted with cork, providing a superior non-slip grip. A floor-to-ceiling wall of custom walnut cabinetry helps to keep clutter at bay.
