Designed by Workshop/APD, this spectacular modern home is clad in black shou sugi ban wood siding, its crisp gabled forms rising from a meadow on a bucolic East Hampton, New York property, abutting a multi-acre horse farm,
A covered exterior corridor divides the home, with the owner’s bedroom suite, open-plan living, dining, and kitchen spaces on one side and two private guest suites on the other. Every room oriented toward a stunning pool wrapped on three sides by lush meadow grass. Created as a weekend escape for NYC-based owners and their guests, the home offers a dramatically different take on the Hamptons getaway.

Five Charred Cedar Gables Rising From the Meadow

The home’s five gables are clad in Western red cedar, charred to a subtle “middle-burn” rather than a deep char so the wood’s natural grain remains visible. The dark color was a deliberate selection, set against the tree line to let the house recede into its surroundings rather than compete with them.
A Covered Breezeway Connects the Home’s Two Wings

Cantilevered rooflines shelter the outdoor living spaces from the summer sun while keeping interiors free of supporting columns, and rain chains stand in for traditional gutters and downspouts, channeling water in a way that suits the house’s sculptural form.
Indoor-Outdoor Living Around the Pool

Farm Landscape Design surrounded the home in native grasses and wildflowers, with bluestone around the pool and river rock forming the garden pathways to blur the line between architecture and landscape.
Shou Sugi Ban Siding Details and Craftsmanship

Nakamoto Forestry provided the black Pika-Pika® yakisugi siding used on the entire exterior of the structure: Pika-Pika® Alkyd Black 1 x 6 x 12 Shiplap and Pika-Pika® Alkyd Black 1 x 8 x 12 S3S Square Edge.

What We Love About This Home
The project team did a fabulous job of transforming a simple weekend retreat into a gorgeous architectural statement. We especially love how the bold, dark exterior recedes into the meadow rather than fighting it, while the covered breezeway creates such a striking welcome to the pool beyond. The result feels both dramatic and at peace with its rural surroundings.
