1930s Californian bungalow in Sydney gets a brilliant transformation

A 1930s Californian Bungalow was renovated by Architect Prineas, located in Lane Cove, a suburb on the Lower North Shore of Sydney, New South Wales, Australia. The scope of the project involved a reconfiguration of the existing dwelling, creating expansive living spaces with an open plan kitchen and dining area—all connected to the garden.

A rear addition was also configured, connected to the main house via a small link, creating a visual distinction between old and new. This link forms two internal courtyards, which specifically caters to the en-suite bathroom and the study. This helps to bring natural light into the spaces as well as blurring the indoor-outdoor boundaries.

“Faced with a limited budget, the design began with a shed-like structure that would be simple to construct. Ways to bring in light were explored through the manipulation of the roof line. The highlight windows draw views of the treetops into the kitchen and living areas, creating a strong connection between the interior and leafy surrounds,” states the architects. The result is a minimally design dwelling enhanced by generously scaled spaces that brings a fresh new dynamic to the existing structure.

The material palette was kept simple yet dynamic, with large windows outlined in black framing the views of the garden. Crisp and clean white walls serves as a backdrop to the monochrome palette that lets nature take center stage. It also provides a nice contrast to the black detailing. Polished concrete flooring adds to the minimal aesthetic, while also helping create thermal efficiency. An extensive timber deck outside allows ample space for entertaining family and friends.

What We Love: This Californian bungalow showcases a bright and airy interior with expansive windows that frames the lush surrounding landscape. The architects redesigned this minimal home to retain the original footprint while not losing the charm of the original home. The addition allows for more living space while also extending outdoor entertaining spaces at the rear of the property. Although practical in design, the overall aesthetics is completely stunning… What do you think?

Above: Helping to soften the monochrome aesthetic, timber furnishings infuses warmth to the spacious living areas, while neutral accents compliments the palette. Subtle accents of green and mint references the verdant surrounding landscape, without overpowering the minimal design.
