This modern farmhouse style home was designed for family living by Arcanum Architecture in collaboration with Jennifer Robin Interiors. This newly designed 5,300 square foot residence is located in Menlo Park, a city in the San Francisco Bay area of California. The dwelling is sited on a narrow lot, designed in an H-shaped layout. This helps to maximize the living spaces and the views to the outdoors.
The family loves to entertain, but they wanted a design where both kids and adults could enjoy the living spaces. So the design team created an open layout on the first floor with plenty of gathering spaces. Areas where the kids could run around and play and the adults could still feel welcome. The kitchen island was designed to be expansive, while the living room offers ample seating. The kitchen is the heart of the home, where the family enjoys their activities.
A large staircase connects the main floor living areas with the upstairs private bedroom zones. At night, large windows allows the staircase to be viewed from the street, illuminated by custom light fixtures. Natural light also illuminates this space during the day. Even though the staircase can be seen publicly, the rest of the home remains private. Comfortable living spaces were designed with the intention of connecting the indoors with private outdoor spaces.

Above: The kitchen, breakfast nook and living room are all open to each other and to the backyard. The spaces have a harmonious flow thanks to a neutral color palette and material elements. This includes repeated elements such as exposed wood beams, rich wood flooring and dark wood built-ins. The designer tends to stay clear of trendy decorating, instead opting for neutral furnishings. This way, if her client gets tired of throw pillows, they are simple to change up several years down the road.
