In the beachside community of Coronado, California lies this classic East Coast-inspired home with a contemporary flair, designed by Christian Rice Architects. The residence was designed as a second home for a couple from Mexico City, inspired by the houses of Martha’s Vineyard and Nantucket. The architects coinย this style “coastal architecture”, a vernacular these architects work with often. Since the homeowners prefer contemporary architecture, they sought to have an updated version of classic East Coast style. The dwelling is positioned on a large yet unusually shaped site compared to other home sites in the area, which are long and narrow.
With this challenge, this meant the bulk of the home would be seen from the curb. So to play down the size of the home, the architects left a rather large existing pine tree at the front of the property. This helped to breakย up the front facade, while also allowing some shade and privacy. The main house was given an L-shaped orientation, while a guest house with a linear shape and a covered patio creates an expansive, open courtyard central to the plan. Most of the interior spaces were designed to engage with the courtyard, lending a sense of openness and light to the abode.
The architectย added a modern metal roof to play off the East Coast-inspired architecture. To compliment this, elements of gables and a columned porch were incorporated into the exterior architecture for curb appeal. To stand up to the harsh seasideย elements, cementitious fiberboard siding was selected, a low-maintenance cement-based composite.

The bright, clean lines were brought into the interiors, withย a predominately white and charcoal color palette. White oak flooring can be seen throughout the main living spaces, adding to the brightness of the interiors. According to the architects, “the aesthetics take inspiration from the simple, clean lines of a traditional โA-frameโ barn, intermixed with sleek, minimal detailing that gives the home a contemporary flair. The interior and exterior materials and colors reflect the bright, vibrant hues and textures of the seaside locale.”
What We Love: With a main house, guest house, swimming pool and a beautiful outdoor living area, this home offers everything you would want in a retreat. The interiors reflect a bright and sunny atmosphere, interconnecting coastal and contemporary design. Spaces flow harmoniously from one to the next, with comfortable, inviting interiors to relax and enjoy.
