This modern beach house is extremelyย welcomingย and chic, the imagination ofย Chris Barrett Design, situatedย on a walk street in Manhattan Beach, California. The dream home was for a couple of empty nesters who wished to stay in their current property, but start over with the adjacent vacant lot that they had used for the past 26 years as a yard.ย The residence was designed with entertaining in mind, forย multi-generations to come together for intimate dinner parties and large family gatherings. Demonstrating strong and clean masculine lines, balanced beautifully with feminine layers. The main level incorporates an open plan kitchen, dining and family room. The second story encompasses private zones of a spacious master bedroom suite with a library and study. The new addition on the second property is connected by a steel bridge, inspired by Japanese teahouse design. When family members come to visit, they spend time in the lower portion of the home, which houses a gym, games room and a guest suite. On the third level, there are a trio of suites, designed mainly for the children and grandchildren. The outdoor living spaces aroundย the L-shaped home centers around a courtyard with a swimming pool and fireplace.
An indoor-outdoor connection was integral to the design of this property, and throughout the interiors, natural light filters through with clerestory windows and sliding glass doors. Incorporating sustainable features was also important to the design project, by wayย ofย passive solar design and maximizing daylighting. Through both systems, the need for air conditioning and electric lighting were both decreased substantially. The home is so eco-friendly, that all systems have been zoned to operate for only the floors that are in use.

Creating a timeless aesthetic was key to theย interior design scheme, which displays a neutral color palette reflecting beach sand, with pops of raspberry. The ocean also served as inspiration to the scheme, with some spaces painted in soft hues of blue and green. The designers wanted to injectย warmth to the spaces with a patinated aesthetic, while at the same time keeping everything chic and fresh. Beautiful furnishings decorate the spaces, with a mix of retro and vintage, paired with designer pieces rangingย from Anthropologie to antiques.
What We Love: What is not to love about this amazing beach house design? The indoor-outdoor connection, double height ceilings in the great room and the importance of family that inspired the design concept. We love that this is a forever home, designed to host the owner’s parents, children and grandchildren, yet ultimately pass the home down through generations.
