Andrew Mann Architecture, along with Sherry Williamson Design, has reimagined this home for an artist and her family with environmentally conscious design in the San Francisco Bay Area, California. The project included a complete interior and exterior renovation, inspired by the simplicity of New England colonial architecture. The property features clean lines and eco-friendly design features throughout.
The scope of this project entailed opening the interior layout to create bright and airy living spaces. The architects also raised the flat ceilings with custom-designed steel tension trusses. While the interior designer selected an understated finish palette that runs throughout this three-story dwelling. This quiet backdrop is complemented by custom-designed built-ins for storage and functionality, mid-century furnishings, vintage lighting, and antique Laver Kirman rugs. This house achieved LEED Platinum certification.
FSC (Forest Stewardship Council)-certified plain-sawn American white oak clads the walls, floors, ceilings, doors, and casework, creating a refined cabin-like aesthetic. Only 11 other materials were used on both the exterior and interior, a discerning palette that was selected by the interior designer in collaboration with the artist homeowner. The homeowner wished to go beyond the issues that are addressed in the LEED certification process.
Each building product had to go through a comprehensive screening process, which looked for over 900 chemicals of concern. Stainless steel was used as a substitute for brass in the plumbing fixtures, eliminating lead exposure, while alternatives to standard plywood were found to avoid VOCs and formaldehyde occurring in laminate glues. The finished result of this beautiful renovation is the perfect marriage between aesthetics, sustainability, and healthfulness.
What We Love: This San Francisco Bay Area home features a unique design from the exterior, presenting a modern facade that is not just square or rectangular. On the interior, the extensive use of wood is warm and inviting, while the open concept and vaulted ceilings add to the overall beauty. The expansive windows at the rear of the property help to frame the views while allowing natural light to illuminate the interiors.
