English Tudor style home with a beautiful modern twist in South Carolina

English-tudor-style-home-exterior

MHK Architecture designed this stunning home that reinterprets the details of traditional English Tudor architecture, blending a timeless European aesthetic with clean lines and modern minimalism, nestled in the Cleveland Park neighborhood of Greenville, South Carolina. Surrounded by lush greenery and scenic views, the community provides a peaceful retreat from the hustle and bustle of city life.

The homeowners are a couple approaching retirement who looked all over the country for their dream property. They spend part of their time living abroad in Belgium, however, they have a grown child who lives nearby, making it all the more enticing to commission Ridgeline Design Studio to build their dream home in this location. The large windows throughout this home are from the Kolbe Windows VistaLuxe collection, helping to frame views of the serene landscape.

The homeowners admire the ancient design features and finishes from Europe, particularly the English Tudor style. They also love the openness and tall visual elements that a Modern style offers. The project team combined these two architectural styles, using windows and doors to highlight the best aspects of both.

One key stylistic requirement for the Community Design Guidelines of Cleveland Park is that the design must hold historical reference and merit. While entirely modern designs are not acceptable, a modern interpretation of a historic style does meet the guidelines.

Tudor-style homes traditionally feature steeply pitched gable roofs, elegant masonry and stonework, embellished doorways, groupings of windows, and stately wooden beams set in a stucco or stone facade. To modernize a classic, historic design, the architect’s solution was to reinterpret the glass details on a grander scale. The owners wanted large glass openings with views. To avoid interrupting these views, fewer mullions were integrated into the design.

What We Love: The architects did a beautiful job of modernizing an English Tudor-style home and providing this home’s inhabitants with warm and welcoming living spaces. We especially love the curb appeal of the front facade with its stone arched structure that is used as a front porch and entryway into the study. The big sweeping arches present a grand experience when entering into this magnificent home. The large windows throughout this home are also a fabulous feature, providing an abundance of light and capturing the views of nature.
