This magnificent modern refuge was reimagined by Prentiss Balance Wickline Architects and Ore Studios, nestled on a beautiful site near Friday Harbor on San Juan Island, Washington. Originally built in the 1980s, the 5,000 square foot house was sensitively sited yet very dated and slightly awkward inside, necessitating a major refresh. After purchasing the property, the homeowners commissioned the architects to renovate the main house and ADU, while the interior designers were asked to update the finishes, fixtures, and interior decor.
With their previous residence done in a very different period style, the homeowners brought only a few pieces of art and a table with them. Everything else was selected for these spaces. Warm wood finishes and chalky paints prevent a feeling of chill from entering the home, and handmade tiles and textured papers provide visual interest and variation. Furnishings were specified for comfort and ease, with a cozy, low-maintenance perspective in mind.

What We Love: This modern refuge on San Juan Island was beautifully revamped to meet the lifestyle needs of its owners. With the addition of new windows and sliding glass doors, not only does this home better connect to the outdoors but has enhanced natural light. With the removal of interior walls, the spaces now have a more improved flow, which helps to make living spaces feel light and airy. We also love the simple material palette of white oak and reclaimed wood for the floors, which adds warmth to the interior.

Note: Be sure to check out a couple of other incredible home tours that we have highlighted here on One Kindesign in the state of Washington: This coastal contemporary home offers a cozy refuge on San Juan Island and This summer home offers a stunning hilltop haven on Orcas Island, Washington.
A simple palette of reclaimed floors, white oak cabinets, and millwork creates a warm backdrop for handmade tiles and contemporary furnishings. New steel detailing was added to existing stonework to breathe new life into existing portions of the house and a custom wood entry door, built by island artisans, provides a breathtaking first impression.
Working within the angled geometry of the existing structure, additional windows were added to open views across the water to the south end of San Juan Island and Lopez Island.
Sliding doors connect the living room to the deck, allowing the sounds of nearby Griffin Bay to permeate the house, where a nearby rip current runs over rocks like a river.
