This waterfront modern farmhouse was desgined by Cardello Architects together with Fletcher Custom Homes, nestled in Rowayton, a coastal village in the city of Norwalk, Connecticut. The narrow waterfront lot presented a design challenge. After looking at the home that used to occupy this lot, the most obvious design decision was to face the garage doors toward the street, but this parcel also included the rights to a side area that had been visually severed from the property.
This space enabled the project team to design a home that is attractive from both the curb and the water. The steeply pitched slope challenged the team to create a 6,000-square-foot dwelling that did not tower disproportionally over the waterfront and mooring below. The lower level features a bath, wet bar, television, and games space that opens out to a grotto area — complete with a trellis-covered spool (small pool) and outdoor shower. To create this space, the builder was confined by the fifty-foot wide lot that was too close to the neighbors for blasting. Instead, they had to drill and hammer for months!
