In collaboration with Pinney Designs, Hammer Architects has reimagined this historic beach house in Provincetown, a small coastal resort town at the northern tip of Cape Cod, Massachusetts. This home has a unique history that dates back to 1850. Its original location was in Long Point, on the tip end of Cape Cod.
This area was once known as a bustling village and one of the most notable features was the lighthouse, which still stands today. The drawback to this location is that it was very remote, the only way to get there during that period was back and forth over sand dunes. When the main sources of income ran dry, the locals moved away.

For some, this was not an easy task. Somewhere between thirty to forty houses were placed on rafts and floated across the harbor to their new location in the West End of Provincetown. Today, modern Provincetown retains its quaint seaside village charm, along with some of those floating homes, which are designated by white and blue plaques.
One of these ‘floater homes,’ which was perched on a corner lot, caught the eye of out-of-state visitors. Less than 2,000 square feet, this home packs in three bedrooms and two and a half bathrooms to boot. Because of the size, furnishings had to be thoughtful. Custom furnishings were designed to fit the space perfectly, which was integral to the design.
A matching coat of paint blended the new fixtures with the existing cabinets. Interiors studio Pinney Designs had fun combining hues and patterns for these color-loving homeowners.
What We Love: This ‘floater home’ was beautifully overhauled by the project team to respect the past while updating to today’s design trends. Living spaces were designed with eye-catching nautical accents, a nod to the region. We love so many details in this home, from the living room with its soaring ceilings and wood beams to the spacious backyard patio with a fire pit that is ready for entertaining family and friends.
