Visbeen Architects has created this gorgeous traditional-style house with a modern farmhouse flair that is situated in Grand Rapids, Michigan. This dwelling was crafted to blend into its surrounding neighborhood, boasting round tapered columns and an eyebrow window, while adding a modern farmhouse finish.
This residence was created to host large groups for entertaining while the size of the spaces can make for intimate family gatherings. The interior color scheme is neutral with splashes of blue and green for a classic feel with a modern twist. Just off the foyer, you can access the home office, which is beautifully wrapped in a two-tone grasscloth and a built-in bookshelf wall finished in dark brown.
The main living space features an open-concept kitchen, dining, and living room where the classic palette is carried through in neutral gray surfaces with splashes of blue as an accent. The plan was designed for a growing family with four bedrooms on the upper level, including the owner’s bedroom suite. A lower level features an additional bedroom and full bathroom, a living room, and a bar for entertaining.

Above: A welcoming foyer with its own charm welcomes you to the home. The arched doorway, custom stair railing, rich brown doors, and fun star-shaped flush-mount ceiling fixtures create a welcoming space for all.
Above: The foyer continues with a hall table, a fun piece of contemporary art and simple greens keeping the space open and encouraging you to continue into the living spaces of the home.
Above: The living room has neutral walls, a pop of dark color on the painted brick fireplace, and consistent colors throughout creating a cohesive space. The space offers plenty of seating for entertaining but is cozy enough for a quiet night at home also.
Above: A comfortable set of chairs by the window with striking patterned fabric livens up this wall and creates the perfect spot for a morning cup of coffee or to rest your feet at the end of the day.
Above: The living spaces are open to each other, making entertaining a breeze. The cased opening to the living room creates a slight sense of separation for every day but doesn’t feel closed off from the other spaces. Blues and neutrals continue throughout the kitchen and dining room, creating an easy flow between all three spaces.
Above: The dining room opens to the kitchen with stairs to the lower level easily accessible. The lantern over the dining table is a focal point for the dining room while the wall of blue subway tile in the kitchen serves as the focal point in that space. The neutral walls serve as a great backdrop to pops of colorful art.
Above: The focal point of the kitchen is the blue subway tiles on the range wall. Having only one wall of backsplash allowed for a bit more fun with tile without any worry of getting too much color or becoming too busy. The shiplap on the window wall adds a nice texture and detail to the space. Shutters painted in the wall color rather stand out against the white trim.

Above: The side door of the home opens into the mud room, laundry, and pantry area. A pop of blue cabinets brings color to the space, while the other elements are kept neutral. The black and white floor tile adds a fun note and the pattern of the floor will help disguise dirt as this is the main entry for the homeowners. Lockers will help keep everything accessible but hidden.
Above: The laundry room takes on a whimsical note with the aviary wallpaper. The glass cabinet knobs have a more casual feel than the bronze hardware of the kitchen.

Above: The interior shutters are painted to match the wall color of the kitchen, creating a pop from the white trim.
Above: The french doors off the foyer open into the inviting home office, the perfect quiet place to get some work done. A comfortable chair for working with another for sitting or for a meeting. The dark tone of the interior doors repeats in the trim of this room, creating a nice contrast to the neutral, textured grasscloth wallpaper.
Above: Dark trim sets off the beige wallpaper and helps the space feel both masculine and feminine. A cozy chair and colorful rug complete the space.
Above: The cozy powder room has a huge impact with the bold and colorful wallpaper. The dark cabinet, bronze light, brown door and wood mirror bring in textural elements and contrast without competing with the bold pattern of the paper.
Above: The hallway with its neutral walls and warm wood flooring is the perfect spot for a great piece of art.
Above: The master suite is the perfect place to retreat to at the end of the day. The soft blue walls are offset by the dark headboard and footboard of the bed.
Above: The master bath has light walls with a clean, white backsplash. The porcelain tile set in a herringbone pattern adds warmth and interest to the space.
Above: The master bath shower is completely tiled with a beveled white subway tile. It is a brickiest pattern on the walls but a herringbone pattern on the ceiling with a marble 1×1 for the shower floor.
Above: The red in the bedskirt, pillow, and bench fabric is set off by the dark color of the bed and the blue on the walls.
Above: The main bath in the house has twin vanities with polished chrome faucets. The black hexagon floor and shiplap finish the space with interesting textures and patterns.
Above: The main bath has a tub with tiled shower walls. The walls are tiled with a ceramic convex shape tile in a soft gray color.
Above: A cozy nursery for a new baby! Light blue geometric wallpaper, a white crib, and a comfortable glider add to the cute factor in this room but it still has a sophisticated feel and is gender neutral.
Above: The lower level is the perfect space to host a party or to watch the game. The bar is set off by dark cabinets, a mirror backsplash, and brass accents. The table serves as the perfect spot for a poker game or a board game.
Above: This lower-level guest bedroom is a haven for guests with its warm walls and white bedding.
Above: The lower level bath has no natural light but still feels light and inviting with the all-white tiled shower and white bathroom floor. The lightness of the permanent elements leaves room for a bold and fun dark wallpaper.
