Workshop Arquitectos has designed Casa Lorena, a small oasis in the center of Mérida, the vibrant capital of the Mexican state of Yucatan. As part of what was once a house from the beginning of the twentieth century, this building remained divided several times until it reached its current dimensions (4.5 meters at the front), a quarter of its original size.
The 1,345-square-foot house boasts a unique feature uncommon in the city center: a slight recess from the street and sidewalk, crafting a quaint entrance space. Stepping past the pastel-hued façade, visitors enter into a cozy parlor, where ceilings soar beyond 5 meters in height. Here, remnants of history remain through the space, as original Decauville beams, imported from France during the henequén (sisal) era, and which were part of the construction system of that period, together with the wooden beams.
An expansive arch invites you to continue towards the kitchen, which features a white quartz central island and pasta tile flooring in blue tones, integrating the hues of the beams in the living room. Through tempered glass doors anchored to aged wooden frames, the terrace harmoniously melds with the kitchen, offering vistas of lush gardens and welcoming streams of natural light.
A roof of reclaimed wooden beams supports Marseille clay tiles, echoing the historic essence of the property. Deliberately stripped of their finish, the walls reveal raw stone, casting a striking contrast against the blue tones of the tile floors and the rich red of the clay tiles.
What We Love: Casa Lorena provides a tranquil oasis within the Yucatan Peninsula, captivating with its rich history and tactile textures. One can’t help but fall in love with its pastel hues that transport you to the past and a much simpler time. We especially love the outdoor living space, the swimming pool is magnificent, surrounded by tropical plants creating a serene retreat that invites relaxation and rejuvenation.

The private zones of the house boast two bedrooms, one situated on the main level, accessed via a wooden deck, and has a small ventilation cube connecting to the bathroom, creating a sense of spaciousness. This area has a modern and dynamic volume, featuring a set of cubes at varying heights and various functions, and has chukum finishes with blue tints.
A courtyard is surrounded by lush tropical greenery where a small pool converges with the stairs of white cement and the hanging planters that lead to the second bedroom, mirroring the spatial layout as the one on the main level.
