This spectacular wine country home was reimagined by Holder Parlette Architecture and is situated atop Howell Mountain above Napa Valley, California. This 5.5-acre promontory site uniquely blends mountain surroundings and far-off valley views. The owners of this 3,000-square-foot, 1960s ranch house wanted to take advantage of the breathtaking surroundings.
While maintaining most of the house’s perimeter walls, the architects raised the roof five feet and integrated a new steel window and door scheme to maximize views near and far. Imbuing the corners of the house on the southside with large windows and doors blurs the intersection of the house and site.

Local Saint Helena cottage stone was incorporated into the entry facade, landscaping, and interiors, connecting this rustic yet elegant retreat to the awe-inspiring site.
The great room seamlessly merges with the surroundings through the use of natural elements such as cedar-clad ceilings, Douglas fir beams, and accents of local St. Helena cottage stone.
“We used blackened steel for some structural elements, which contrasts nicely with natural wood and stone,” states the architects.
