This beautiful red barn house has undergone a full-scale interior renovation by JAM Architecture, located in Egremont, a town in Berkshire County, Massachusetts. This expansive property consists of two repurposed pre-revolutionary war era barns that were relocated and combined into a single-family home in the early 2000s.
While the ingredients were right, the home had several awkward and quirky design selections that prevented it from coming together into a cohesive whole. The goal of this renovation project was to reconfigure and bring more natural light into the owner’s bedroom suite and create more vantage points in and around the home to enjoy the expansive valley and mountain views.

What We Love: This red barn house was beautifully transformed to create light and airy living spaces for its inhabitants. The reconfigured design has an improved flow that seamlessly connects each area, creating a sense of openness and harmony throughout the home. We love how cozy and inviting the homeowner’s bedroom suite feels and the spa-like bathroom with its soaking tub. The outdoor living spaces are now ready for entertaining family and friends.

An enlarged window in the breakfast room and a new outdoor kitchen and fireplace create even more opportunities for the owners to feast their eyes on the breathtaking views. Instead of simply being a converted barn, the property plays up its strong points and truly feels like home.
Before, the spacious suite felt dark and had a challenging layout with an angled half-wall in the center of the room for the bed. The window openings were enlarged to maximize the visibility of the stunning natural views. Barn wood was salvaged from that work to extend one of the walls to make it large enough for a king-size bed.
Now it feels open and cozy with clearly defined zones for sleeping, lounging, and working. Custom fabricated nightstands and a desk in this room were designed to be a clean, modern reflection of the old barn’s structure and joinery.
In the main bathroom, a half-wall was removed and a large built-in jacuzzi tub to enhance spaciousness and highlight the beauty of the high, exposed beam ceilings.
The vanity was relocated to the opposite wall to allow natural light to bounce and play off the mirror to fill the room.
BERKSHIRES BLACK BARN
JAM Architecture together with Country Carpenters wanted a solution for storing their car collection and outdoor equipment that is situated away from their main house. Black Barn has enough space to house six cars. The design selections help this structure blend into its natural surroundings and serve as a more subtle complement to the Red Barn house that is within walking distance.
Taking cues from the main house, traditional barn elements were used both inside and out. The project team painted the “black barn” so that it would not as visible from the main house, especially in the winter once the leaves have fallen.
The grounding element of the design is the sunken outdoor fire pit and patio, providing the perfect way for the whole family to enjoy spending time at the barn. It also serves to soften the garage feel and give a true sense of place on the site. Dry stacked stone was selected for the walls and fire pit to reflect the old walls seen in the area and lend more character to the space.
Windows above each of the doors add visual interest to the façade and bring additional natural light into the interior when working with the doors closed. Warm copper light fixtures were selected for the exterior to provide a nice contrast to the barn’s dark color.
