SALA Architects has designed this light-filled home that is a showcase for biophilic design, nestled in the beautiful St Croix Valley, Minnesota. Its placement on the land gives it a tree-house feeling, especially in the summer. The interiors reflect the serenity of its surroundings, focusing on warm wood throughout, earth tones, and organic textiles, as well as mixed metals, stone, and glass accents to mimic its inspiration and compliment the architecture.
The home, the primary residence for empty-nesters, had to include space for their beloved grown children. Large spaces for gathering, playing games, and musical evenings by the grand piano were paramount in the homeowner’s goals. They now have the best of both worlds: privacy and nature embracing their everyday lives, with room for joyful celebrations with family.

This home emerges from its limestone-rich sloping site and lifts towards the sky with clerestories and canted roofs. Between is an expansive three-story dwelling filled with daylight, framed views, and rich, natural textures.
Stacked limestone veneer, treated cedar, and Parklex panels clad the exterior and recede into the wooded site.
Inside, a combination of white oak and walnut brings warmth and continuity to the airy and art-filled 4500-square-foot interior.
What We Love: This home in the St Croix Valley features radiant living spaces with large windows that frame tranquil views of nature. Wood flooring and built-ins bring warmth into this home, providing an inviting atmosphere for living and entertaining. We love that this home has a four-season sunroom, perfect for the long winter months to still feel connected to the outdoors. Overall, the project team did a beautiful job of focusing on attention to detail throughout.
