J Hurst & Associates together with Beth Howley Creative designed this striking modern farmhouse nestled on eighty acres in Baroda, Michigan. The region is known for its beautiful rolling hills and award-winning wineries. The initial meeting between the designer and the clients took place at their respective residences in Chicago.
Both clients owned an array of classic modern furniture from luxury brands such as Knoll, Platner, Ligne Roset, B+B Italia, and Dialogica. The designer was tasked with elegantly bringing the duo’s collection of furnishings together into their new country estate. The owners desired their interior to blend modern elements with warm, earthy materials that complement their rural surroundings.
Inspiration was drawn from the panoramic countryside and the old barn on the property (some salvaged pieces were used). Concrete surfaces, rich walnut stains, hand-blown glass fixtures, large slabs of tile, Neolith counters, and a hood in the kitchen were thoughtfully selected to create a rich and inviting interior.

In the living room, the spectacular fireplace is over 14 feet wide. Recessed display areas feature built-in shelves that are edged with barn wood from an old barn salvaged on the property. Neolithic porcelain panels have a rusted metal finish. A Hard Topix concrete ledge is the perfect finishing touch, providing a beautiful contrast between the two materials. Organic, warm, and modern all at the same time.
What We Love: This modern farmhouse was created for a couple who had a dream of living in the Michigan countryside. This warm and inviting home boasts thoughtful attention to detail throughout. We love the striking fireplace surround with its mix of materials and the addition of salvage wood shelves. The kitchen is fabulous for cooking and entertaining with its spacious island and a convenient back kitchen for mixing drinks.

Warm flat panel cabinetry nestles perfectly together with the straight matched walnut and the two different dark stones used for the countertops, backslash, and hood. The custom cabinet paint color is Benjamin Moore’s Stone Hearth. It is a perfect blend with Sherwin Williams Aged White that wraps the walls.

Her partner is a great mixologist who needed a place to store a lot of bottles of liquor. This narrow space is located behind the range. A built-in was created across from the workspace.

Custom rift white oak cabinets float off the floor with lighting underneath. The wet room including the tub and shower is separated by a glass door allowing natural light to flood into the space.

This home fulfilled a dream for the owners who had always wanted to own a farm in Southwest Michigan.
