Catalano Architects together with Liz Caan & Co. has designed this beautiful shingle-style cape home located in a walkable neighborhood in Falmouth, a coastal town on Cape Cod, Massachusetts. This inviting cottage provides a serene summer getaway for a growing family. The 4,000-square-foot home’s streamlined silhouette is clad in red cedar shingles, with a decorative facade offering balance and scale.
Prominent elliptical arches with matchboard siding define the entry porch’s perennial style. The front porch was created for sitting and visiting with passersby, neighbors, and family who have all inhabited this small enclave for generations. This warm and welcoming family home is designed for children, adults, slamming screen doors, and little bare feet.

A Chippendale balustrade from the owner’s bedroom suite avails additional deck space and a projecting wide oriel window above lends a playful visual element. The back entry to the home is idyllically framed by a left-of-center arbor gate, leading to a year-round screened-in family room with radiant floors, custom millwork, and built-in fans for a seamless indoor-outdoor connection.
While the exterior needed to fit within the vernacular of the street, the interior architectural details are a bit cleaner and distinctly fitting for this modern and busy family.
“The palette is less expected for a cape home and more casual, focusing on a light and tonal palette with texture and accessible materials. We used a lot of lighter wood tones to give it an inviting and warm feel,” states interior designer Liz Caan.
The interiors embody a relaxed elegance with warm rift-sawn white oak paired with matchboard siding, combined with soft hues of color throughout. The stylish and inviting living areas are imbued with natural light emphasizing traditional fenestration and high ceilings.
